Although lyrics are important don't forget the music itself plays a part as well. If Chuck D didn't have the sonic clout created by the bomb squad his lyrics wouldn't be so powerful.

In essence hip hop is collaging samples in a very clever way that the rapper integrates them as his own and this gives everything more depth. Take the sirens and thudding beat of KRS-one's Sound of da Police. It makes the song menacing and the listener more conscious of the message being put through.

that is why I still see hip hop as music of the future - there is so much potential and it hasn't even been touched upon yet. (Even though I think that Flying Lotus may turn a few heads soon but then I said that about Prefuse 73 and nothing monumentous happened really) I think the golden period definitely proved that hip hop can bend minds and there are still followers who believe this.

one first class political hip hop book is Jeff Chang's Can't Stop wont Stop and it starts off with Gil Scott Heron and the Last Prophets and then with Kool Herc Jamaica/Africa ties.

if you want a history of the djing aspect of hip hop Frank Brewster's chapter on the ssubject in the book. Last night a dj saved my life is the best.

also worth noting is Lloyd Bradley's book on Reggae 'Bass Culture' - which talks about the sound system parties evolving into the bloc ones and Herc, Bambataa and Grand Wizard Theodore Jamaican roots.

now for something different

what do you guys think of Kanye West - I think he is trying to be the successor to pete rock ( I love West's use of samples) but doesn't have the lyrical intelligence to do so.

definitely think kanye west is a musical genius but a lyrical wreck! Have you heard of stoop the en emy of man kind? he produces mostly for Jedi Mind Tricks, an agressive islamic outfit from philadelphia..he uses alot of samples too..and really well!

another group I think is turning heads is La Coka Nostra. Its a rap supergroup made up of quite a few Emcees and Producers. They include Everlast from house of Pain, Danny Diablo, Ill Bill, Slaine and many more. Slaine is the definite star of the super group. His solo efforts White Man is the Devil volume 1 and 2 are probably my favourite mixtapes of all time.

apathy`s mixtape Where`s Your Album is also dope. has one beat on their by Kanye too.
